Hello....please can anyone suggest whether they favour the enteric-coated sulphasalazine, or know if there is a noticable difference if changed from one to the other, maybe accidently, because E/C wasn't written on clinic scrip? My rheumy nurse increased my dose from 2 grams daily to 3 grams daily today and took me off Naproxen because of mucus cough. Methotx and hydoxy were stopped back in March for the same reason. I have always had the coated tablets, but when I got home from the hospital I found that the pharmacy has given me non-coated tablets, and I am nervous of taking them. Tried phoning nurse, but clinic shut! Pharmacist said the E/C wasn't written on scrip hence dispensing different ones. Any thoughts very welcome.

Something similar to this happened to me once.
I had changed my GP and had to see a doctor for my first lot of tablets. I took the prescription to the chemist (as luck would have it right next door to the GP's surgery) and noticed that the SLZ look different, if I remember right it was a different shape. I checked with the pharmacist if I had been given the right tablets. Turned out that the GP had not put e/c on the prescription, so I wasn't given what I had normally taken. He told me that the ones with e/c didn't start to dissolve until they were in the stomach. I went back to the doctors surgery and had the prescription changed.
Are you taking a stomach protector? I would imagine that if you are then there really shouldn't be a problem, but I would still check. I'm assuming that you will still have some of the coated tablets left from your last prescription, but if you haven't I wouldn't think that missing a dose would make much difference. Hopefully sometime tomorrow you will be able to speak to your nurse. I have in the past missed taking them and haven't noticed any difference with mt RA.
Paula x

Thanks Paula, yes I have still got some E/C tablets. I take Omeprazole one hour before breakfast, and take the SLZ with my breakfast and evening meal. I will ring the nurse to ask but generally only replies to answerphone questions on a Wednesday. Kind regards Veronica

Just to add an alternative, I took the liquid version of sulphasalazine - as I couldn't swallow the tablets as they were too big and your are not allowed to cut them in half!! It was bright orange; but I had to stop as it gave me such horrible headaches - but that could have been all the colouring!!

These meds are notorious for upsetting tummies.

Hi
I tried them last year, had to stop them as they gave me a upset tummy every day! Not funny when you have an hour bus journey to work!
Hope they work for you.
Take Care
